Street Parish Council Takes Over Management of Street Market
For Immediate Release: 1st May 2025
Street Parish Council is pleased to announce its decision to take over the management of the weekly Street Market, held every Thursday. This transition forms part of Somerset Council’s asset & service devolution process, which aims to empower local communities and improve the delivery of public services.
Although the Market in Street is not covered by any historic Market Charter, Street Parish Council has invoked its market rights under Part III of the Food Act 1984.
The Parish Council originally made its commitment in December 2024 to assume responsibility for the Street Market from 1st April 2025, including operational and running costs. Official approval was granted by Somerset Council in February 2025, following engagement with traders. Street Parish Council has since worked to manage and facilitate the transition effectively.
Two dedicated Market Officers – Matt and Craig – have been employed to oversee weekly operations and help develop the Market into a thriving, sustainable service for Street.
Though Street Market is relatively young compared to its neighbours, it already has a distinctive identity, thanks to a strong base of street food and speciality traders. Officers are working alongside NABMA (National Association of British
Market Authorities) and local traders to assess the current offer and shape a strategic vision for the Market’s future.
As part of these improvements, the Council will also engage with traders and residents and introduce much-needed signage to raise awareness of the Market and notify drivers of High Street closures on market days.
Street Parish Council will conduct a formal review of the Market service after six months, with the intention of developing a long-term Market Strategy to guide future growth.
With this new model of management and delivery, Street Parish Council is committed to preserving the High Street as a vibrant space for traders, residents, and visitors. The Council aims to grow the Market offering and implement improvements that benefit the entire community.
Key Points of the Transition:
· Enhanced Local Control: The devolution process gives Street Parish Council the ability to make decisions that reflect the specific needs and character of Street.
· Improved Vendor Support: New initiatives will be introduced to support market traders and ensure strong communication.
· Community Engagement: Residents and local businesses will be invited to contribute ideas and feedback to shape the future of the Market and help it serve as a showcase for our High Street.
Chair of Street Parish Council, Bryan Knickerbocker, said: “We are excited to take on the management of Street Market. This is a fantastic opportunity to enhance a Market that is part of our High Street’s identity and ensure it thrives for many years to come. We look forward to working closely with traders and residents to make Street Market even better in the days ahead.”
